Saint Who? Part II--Surnames, Titles

While doing my post on unexpected saints' names a while back, I noticed some fun name possibilities with their surnames/titles. There are many Marian names that came about this way, but it's much rarer with other saints. However, at least one has made it into everyday American usage: Xavier, from Saint Francis Xavier.

  • Agira (ah-JEE-rah)--from St. Philip of Agira, patron saint of U.S. Army Special Forces.
  • Amasea (ah-MAH-see-ah)--home of a few saints, notably Theodore of Amasea, patron of soldiers and for the recovery of lost items.

  • Ely (EE-lee)--home of three saints: Ermenilda of Ely, Etheldreda of Ely, & Seaxburh of Ely.
  • Evreux (AYV-reoo)--from St. Maximus of Évreux, patron against drought
  • Genoa (JEN-oh-ah)--home of many saints, most notably Catherine of Genoa, patroness of brides, difficult marriages, & victims of unfaithfulness.
  • Imola (EE-moh-lah)--from St. Cassian of Imola, patron of schoolteachers & clerks.
  • Kildare (kil-DAYR, kil-DAH-rah)--from St. Brigit Kildare, patron of Ireland, and many, many other things.
  • Lellis (LEL-lis)--from St. Camillus de Lellis, patron of physicians, hospitals, and the sick.
  • Lunel (loo-NEL)--from St. Gerard de Lunel, patron of epileptics, against headaches.
  • Marillac (mah-ree-AK)--from St. Louise de Marillac, patroness of social workers & widows.
  • Merici (meh-REE-chee)--from St. Angela Merici, patroness of the sick, handicapped, and orphaned.
  • Merida (MEHR-ee-dah)--from St. Eulalia of Mérida, patroness of widows & runaways.
  • Milan (mee-LAHN)--home of many saints, notably Ambrose of Milan, patron of students, beekeepers, and chandlers.
  • Mineo (min-EH-oh)--from St. Agrippina of Mineo, patroness againts infections, diseases, and storms.

  • Verona (veh-ROH-nah)--from St. Zeno of Verona, patron of newborns and fishermen
  • Vianney (vee-AHN-nay, vee-AN-nay)--from St. John Mary Vianney, patron of priests and many Midwestern dioceses.

The Biggest Losers (2012)

Which names are rising is undoubtedly more fun, but which names are on the decrease can be quite telling, too. And of course, parents of kids with these names are probably happy to see them becoming less popular. ;)

Biggest drops in rank (Top 500 only--let's face it, the higher they are, the more interesting the fall):

Boys:
  1. Brayan  (#427 --> 499)
  2. Jalen (#399 --> 470)
  3. Trey  (#324 --> 393)
  4. Amare (#426 --> 495)
  5. Casey (#423 --> 486)
  6. Payton (#397 --> 458)
  7. Jakob (#335 --> 395)
  8. Randy (#355 --> 413)
  9. Jerry (#393 --> 447)
  10. Jaylen (#206 --> 257)
  11. Braylon (#233 --> 279)
  12. Emanuel (#261 --> 306)
  13. Devon  (#352 --> 397)
  14. Reece (#440 --> 485)
  15. Braden (#259 --> 303)
  16. Raul (#359 ---> 402)
  17. Mitchell (#420 --> 463)
  18. Jimmy (#418 --> 460)
  19. Jaden (#100 --> 140)
  20. Corey (#312 --> 351)

Girls:
  1. Dulce (#415 --> 574)
  2. Mikaela (#452 --> 592)
  3. Estrella (#433 --> 562)
  4. Danna (#365 --> 490)
  5. Audrina (#319 --> 440)
  6. Cameron (#443 --> 553)
  7. Kiera (#483 --> 590)
  8. Savanna (#346 --> 447)
  9. Tenley (#424 --> 520)
  10. Paola (#479 --> 575)
  11. Breanna (#308 --> 403)
  12. Kendra (#293 --> 387)
  13. Jasmin (#421 --> 515)
  14. Kailyn (#399 --> 492)
  15. Joselyn (#370 --> 461)
  16. Kiley (#423 --> 513)
  17. Jayden (#292 --> 380)
  18. Liana (#463 --> 546)
  19. Sasha (#373 --> 451)
  20. Karen (#287 --> 353)
Whoa, Jay-names (and to a lesser extent other -ay-names) down for both genders!  Interesting.

Biggest percentage decreases of 2012:

Boys:
  1. Jacob (1% --> 0.94%)
  2. Justin (0.35% --> 0.29%)
  3. Tyler (0.44% --> 0.38%)

  1. Chloe (0.57% --> 5%)
  2. Alexis (0.34% --> 0.28%)
  3. Addison (0.48% --> 0.42%)
  4. Madison (0.64% --> 0.59%)
  5. Alyssa (0.31% --> 0.26%)
  6. Isabella (1.02%--> 0.99%)
  7. Natalie (0.45% --> 0.41%)
  8. Nevaeh (0.31% --> 0.28%)
  9. Ashley (0.28% --> 0.24%)
  10. Makayla (0.23% --> 0.19%)
Hmm, both Hayden & Jaden are on this list (and Jayden  is at #12). Could the -aidens really be on the way out? And classic boys' names (as in, perpetually common) continue to lose ground...

Biggest drops in relative frequency (how much more common they were in 2011):

Boys:
  1. Jorden (1.53x)
  2. Tremaine (1.44x)
  3. Treyton (1.43x)
  4. Jerimiah (1.42x)
  5. Giovani (1.39x)
  6. Lathan (1.39x)
  7. Kenyon (1.38x)
  8. Kyron (1.38x)
  9. Bailey (1.37x)
  10. Braedon (1.37x)
  11. Yandel (1.36x)
  12. Zachery (1.36x)
  13. Jovany (1.36x)
  14. Branden (1.35x)
  15. Jordyn (1.35x)
  16. Jaden (1.35x)
  17. JohnPaul (1.33x)
  18. Jakobe (1.33x)
  19. Desean (1.33x)
  20. Trevon (1.33x)

Girls:
  1. Jaden (1.58x)
  2. Dulce (1.49x)
  3. Payten (1.47x)
  4. Yamilet (1.45x)
  5. Shaniya (1.43x)
  6. Caleigh (1.41x)
  7. Danna (1.4x)
  8. Audrina (1.39x)
  9. Tegan (1.38x)
  10. Estrella (1.38x)
  11. Jazmyn (1.37x)
  12. Kiersten (1.37x)
  13. Shania (1.37x)
  14. Tianna (1.36x)
  15. Naima (1.36x)
  16. Ashton (1.36x)
  17. Mikaela (1.35x)
  18. Karley (1.34x)
  19. Janiah (1.33x)
  20. Jaiden (1.33x)
Wow. Overall, Jayden & spelling variants are easily the name decreasing the most, for both genders. Two different spellings for Michaela, Payton, Jordan, Jacob, Giovanni, and Jasmine, too. Hmmm....

What Does 'Change' Mean? (2012) Part III

Change in rankings is one way to gauge change in popularity, and it definitely has its advantages--easy to quantify & easy to understand. However, I find a change in percentage analysis a bit more interesting. It shows just how much more popular a name has gotten.

The biggest gains in usage in 2012 were:

Boys:
  1. Liam (0.66% --> 0.83%)
  2. Gael (0.034% --> 0.13%)
  3. Brantley (0.079% --> 0.13%)
  4. Jaxon (0.23% --> 0.31%)
  5. Ethan (0.82% --> 0.87%)
  6. Jace (0.18% --> 0.23%)
  7. Eli (0.355% --> 0.40%)
  8. Damian (0.043% --> 0.19%)
  9. Henry (0.36% --> 0.40%)
  10. Hudson (0.17% --> 0.21%)

Girls:
  1. Harper (0.35% --> 0.37%)
  2. Emma (0.97% --> 1.08%)
  3. Paisley (0.08% --> 0.15%)
  4. Aria (0.1% --> 0.17%)
  5. Skylar (0.11% --> 0.17%)
  6. Aubree (0.15% --> 0.21%)
  7. Zoey (0.33% --> 0.39%)
  8. Charlotte (0.33% --> 0.39%)
  9. Avery (0.38% --> 0.43%)
  10. Amelia (0.33% --> 0.37%)
The reason I prefer percentage-change analysis to rankings is that rankings sometimes aren't all that helpful. So Ethan went from #8 to #4 (which is pretty impressive a jump in the top 10, actually)--does that really mean it's that much more common this year than last? Well, no, not really. In 2011 about 8 in 1000 boys were named Ethan, and in 2012 that increased to about 9 in 1000. The top names are actually all very close to each other in usage.
Which brings me to another fun exercise--relative frequency. While your chances of meeting a baby Ethan haven't really changed all that much, you may have noticed in the lists above that Gael's percentage nearly quadrupled. That's right, you're almost 4x more likely to meet a baby Gael than you were last year.
The biggest risers in relative frequency (only includes names in the Top 1500 for 2012):

Boys:
  1. Damoni (5.5x)
  2. Jayceon (4.3x)
  3. Gael (4x)
  4. Jionni (3.9x)
  5. Trayvon (3.24x)
  6. Brantlee (2.9x)
  7. Major (2.83x)
  8. Zayn (2.73x)
  9. Brantley (2.6x)
  10. Jase (2.5x)
  11. Brently (2.33x)
  12. Gionni (2.32x)
  13. Damani (2.3x)
  14. Messiah (2.1x)
  15. Iker (2x)
  16. King (1.97x)
  17. Foster (1.96x)
  18. Dakari (1.8x)
  19. Neymar (1.78x)
  20. Kyrie (1.77x)

Girls:
  1. Cataleya (22.8x) [no, that is NOT a typo!]
  2. Kataleya (19.3x)
  3. Adley (5.8x)
  4. Litzy (3.34x)
  5. Sutton (3.3x)
  6. Kenia (2.78x)
  7. Batsheva (2.4x)
  8. Blakely (2x)
  9. Arya (1.96x)
  10. Malaysia (1.95x)
  11. Monroe (1.9x)
  12. Itzayana (1.84x)
  13. Zooey (1.8x)
  14. Colette (1.8x)
  15. Paisley (1.79x)
  16. Rosie (1.7x)
  17. Kenya (1.7x)
  18. Ivory (1.65x)
  19. Alyanna (1.65x)
  20. Braylee (1.64x)

Gotta say, I have no idea where Damani & Damoni came from. Jionni/Gionni is a bit of a surprise, but a logical successor to Giovanni & its many forms. Brantley & Brentley continue their rise from last year. Could they be Top 100 material in a couple years?
I don't think anyone saw Cataleya coming. Adley, Sutton, Blakely, & Monroe are no surprise, following easily in the modern surnames-for-girls trend. Rosie & Colette are nice surprises.

Assessing Predictions

Alright, so back in September I took a chance & made some predictions, based on a change in number of alternate spellings. Time to see how that worked out.....if I have to.....

Names I pegged to keep rising:
  • Aiden--this spelling dropped one spot, and a smaller percentage of boys were given the name Aiden/Aidan/Ayden. Fail.
  • Kason--from #417 --> 385. Right!
  • Josiah--from #80 --> #79. Right!
  • Zayden--from #292 --> 229. Right!
  • Grayson--from #97 --> 85. Right!
  • Amaya--from #211 --> 215. Fail. Maya has been slowly decreasing for a few years now, so I shouldn't be too surprised.
  • Adalyn--from #214 --> 197. Right!
  • Olivia--still #4, and the percentage was approximately the same, too! I'll have to wait until NameNerds' combined-spelling list comes out.
  • Callie--from #221 --> 212. Cali jumped from #389 --> 329, though, so.....almost?
  • Kendall--from #124 --> 116. Right!
  • Zoey--from #28 --> 20. Right!
  • Katherine--from #61 --> 64. The top 4 forms of Katherine all fell, in fact. Major fail!

Names I pegged to fall / keep falling:
  • Jayden--from #4 --> 7. Right! Well, tentatively. It's possible enough unusual spellings have  risen to make a gain overall.
  • Zachary--from #64 --> 68. Right!
  • Brayden--from #37 --> 39. Right!
  • Nicholas--from #42--> 49. Right!
  • Caleb--still #32, but the percentage dropped slightly. I guess the verdict is still out.
  • Elijah--still #13, but the percentage rose slightly. Tentative fail.
  • Damian--from #137 --> 97. Major fail! Is there some cultural reference I've missed?
  • Arianna--from #52 --> 49. Fail.
  • Kaylee--from #36 --> 34. Tentative fail. Kaylee has more alternates than almost any other name on this list, so I'll have to check again when NameNerds' list come out.
  • Makayla--from #56 --> 69. Right!
  • Jocelyn--from #70 --> 92. Right!
  • Kaelyn--from #386 --> 417. Right!
  • Madelyn--from #79 --> 67. Fail.
  • Brianna--from #45 --> 51. Right!
  • Riley--still #47, but the percentage dropped slightly. However, this is yet another name with many alternates.
  • Hailey--still #32, but the percentage dropped slightly.
  • Kylie--from #58 --> 59. Tentatively right, but I'll have to look at the other spellings.
  • Addison--from #13 --> 14. Right!
  • Kaydence--from #263 -- >271
  • Juliana--still #147, but the percentage went up slightly!. Fail.
  • Lillian--from #22 --> 25. Right!
  • Isabella--from #2 --> 3. Right!
  • Madison--from #8 --> 9. Right!
  • Kayden--from #105 --> 99. Fail, tentatively. Kayden has the most alternates of any boys spelling.
  • Giovanni--from #117 --> 119. Right, tentatively. Giovanni has the second-most alternates of any boy name.
  • Jaylen--from #206 --> 257. Right!
  • Malachi--from #164 --> 168. Right!
  • Abigail--still #7, but the percentage went down. Top variant Abbigail also dropped in rank. Right!
  • Aniya--from #414 --> 454. Right!
  • Kaitlyn--from #100 --> 118. Right!
  • Natalie--from #14 --> 17. Right!
  • Emily--still #6, but the percentage has dropped. Right!
  • Peyton--still #53, but the percentage has dropped. Right!
  • Allison--from #40 --> 38. Fail.
  • Destiny--from #91 --> 113. Right!

Overall, I'm pretty proud of myself. However, my guesses were based on momentum & only two data points, so maybe next year I can make a few more risky predictions. ;)

What Does 'Change' Mean? (2012) Part II

And it's time for the boys. First up, the names gathering momentum in the depths of the baby-name world--the highest jumpers from #2500 & up:

  1. Trayvon, +1265 (#2326 --> 1061)
  2. Jionni, +1256 (#2126 --> 870)
  3. Brantlee, +1040 (#2069 --> 1029)
  4. Damani, +834 (#1991 --> 1157)
  5. Gionni, +759 (#1798 --> 1039)
  6. Jordi, +746 (#2402 --> 1656)
  7. Brantly, +724 (#2389 --> 1665)
  8. Cartier, +686 (#2423 --> 1737)
  9. Rishaan, +613 (#2413 --> 1800)
  10. Aayan, +610 (2235 --> 1625)
  11. Laken, +592 (#2348 --> 1756)
  12. Gentry, +587 (#2274 --> 1687)
  13. Ryu, +578 (#1901 --> 1323)
  14. Dakari, +575 (#1827 --> 1252)
  15. Arley, +565 (#2267 --> 1702)
  16. Saad, +564 (#2380 --> 1816)
  17. Foster, +554 (#1549 --> 995)
  18. Drayton, +542 (#2395 --> 1854)
  19. Kabir, +537 (#2209 --> 1672)
  20. Saif, +535 (#2321 --> 1786)

Now, since parents tend to be more conservative when naming boys, it's no surprise that this list is a lot less recognizable than the girls'. Perhaps the top jumpers from #1500 & up will be a bit more revealing:
  1. Major, +505 (#988 --> 483)
  2. Brentley, +417 (1167 --> 750)
  3. Kase, +413 (#1385 --> 972)
  4. Jael, +411 (#1400--> 989)
  5. Jordy, +411 (#1482 --> 1071)

  7. Kyrie, +384 (#1250 --> 866)
  8. Gannon, +366 (#1436 --> 1070)
  9. Deklan, +358 (#1470 --> 1112)
  10. Vivaan, +347 (#1445 --> 1098)
  11. Ares, +340 (#1388 --> 1048)
  12. Neymar, +313 (#1012 --> 699)
  13. Grey, +309 (#1346 --> 1037)
  14. Kaysen, +308 (#1265 --> 957)
  15. Vihaan, +286 (#932 --> 646)
  16. Adler, +282 (#1458 --> 1176)
  17. Jeremias, +279 (#1335 --> 1056)
  18. Zev, +277 (#1485 --> 1208)
  19. Arian, +273 (#922 --> 649)
  20. Graeme, +268 (#1255 --> 987)
Many of these were on last year's list as well--Brentley, Arian, Vihaan, Deklan. Interestingly, Aston & Jaxton were on last years', and Axton is on this years'.

And of course, the names new to the SSA Top 1000 (completely new--not including names that have dropped out & re-entered the Top 1000):
  • Apollo
  • Axton
  • Brentley
  • Briggs
  • Dariel
  • Graeme
  • Jael
  • Jionni
  • Karsen
  • Kase
  • Kaysen

What Does 'Change' Mean? (2012), Part 1

Ah, it's that magical time of year again--where I get even more sleep-deprived than usual, and my husband cannot get a turn on the computer. Yup, the SSA has released the 2012 baby name data.

This year, I'm saving myself the trouble and skipping right to the names ranked #2500 & above. Girls first!(because, let's face it, they're more trend-driven)

And so, the biggest jumps in rank from 2500 & up:
  1. Sutton, +1428 (#2472 --> 1044)
  2. Batsheva, +1083 (#2357 --> 1274)
  3. Haddie, +935 (#2471 --> 1536)
  4. Litzy, +922 (#1516 --> 594)
  5. Kenia, +755 (#1417 --> 642)
  6. Zelda, +726 (#2312 --> 1586)
  7. Milah, +724 (#2333 --> 1609)
  8. Alyanna, +608 (#2087 --> 1479)
  9. Itzayana, +607 (#1787 --> 1180)
  10. Zooey, +603 (#1855 --> 1252)
  11. Etta, +597 (#2256 --> 1659)
  12. Aspyn, +593 (#2321 --> 1728)
  13. Naomy, +592 (#2435 --> 1843)
  14. Monroe, +591 (#1540 --> 949)
  15. Brayleigh, +590 (#2157 --> 1567)
  16. Klaire, +546 (#2459 --> 1913)
  17. Karter, +543 (#2165 --> 1622)
  18. Lakyn, +542 (#2437 --> 1895)
  19. Rosie, +519 (#1638 --> 1119)
  20. Layan, +506 (#2388 --> 1882)
Some of these names are recognizable, others...not so much. So, the names more likely to be on everyone's lists--#1500 & up:
  1. Kenia, +755 (#1417 --> 642)
  2. Katalina, +447 (#1447 --> 1000)
  3. Faye, +413 (#1485 --> 1072)
  4. Malaysia, +400 (#969 --> 569)
  5. Blakely, +392 (#937 --> 545)
  6. Colette, +379 (#1038 --> 659)

  11. Ariya, +316 (#1362 --> 1046)
  12. Chyna, +307 (#1407 --> 1100)
  13. Adela, +306 (#1463 --> 1157)
  14. Penny, +305 (#1388 --> 1083)
  15. Azalea, +304 (#1210 --> 906)
  16. Arya, +298 (#711 --> 413)
  17. Selene, +293 (#1348 --> 1055)
  18. Addilynn, +291 (#1452 --> 1161)
  19. Hattie, +285 (#994 --> 709)
  20. Drew, +284 (#1354 --> 1070)

Wow! Some really great names in there! And some...not so much. And for the second year in a row, Hattie is one of the fastest risers. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

However, the biggest jumps of all didn't even make it into my program, and I almost missed them. But really, who expects names to jump 4000ish places?!?
Any guesses?
The Games of Thrones honorific Khaleesi, +3582 (#5094 --> 1512), and
the floral and Hollywood inspired Cataleya, +4444 (#4923 --> 479). Holy freaking crap!!!

And just for fun--the names new to the SSA Top 1000. Some have already been mentioned, but most have been slowly creeping up for a while.

  • Jacaiden
  • Jacayden

Now, to be fair, a few of these names may not be -aidens...at least not necessarily. I can easily seen Maden being a poor spelling of Madden, and Nayden & Raiden are names in Bulgarian & Japanese respectively, but pronounced "nye-den" & "rye-den". Adán is the Spanish form of Adam, and said "ah-DAHN". There may be others like that I've missed, too.
Unfortunately, there's no way to know, and I imagine both possible interpretations are in use.

Usual Nickname, Unexpected Name--Millie/Mila

I haven't done this one yet? Really?? *hangs head in shame*
Originally short for Millicent, Mildred, and other musty Germanic names, Millie is more likely today to be a nickname for the comeback favorites Amelia & Camilla.
And speaking of rising favorites, Mila has quite a bit of potential overlap with Millie. Although it's pretty established as a given name overseas, it was originally a nickname for many Slavic -mil- names.

  • Amelina (ah-meh-LEE-nah, Germanic)--original form of Emmeline
  • Bohumila (baw-hoo-MEE-lah, Czech)--from Slavic, "dear to God"
  • Camellia (kah-MEE-lee-ah, kah-MEL-ee-ah, English)
  • Jamila (jah-MEE-lah, Arabic)--"beautiful". Spanish form is Yamila.
  • Magnhild (MANG-nhild, Scandinavian)--from Old Norse, "mighty in battle"
  • Marsaili (MAR-sah-lee, Scottish)--form of Marcella
  • Matilda (mah-TIL-dah, English)
  • Maximiliane (maks-ee-mil-YAH-neh, German)--other forms include Maximilienne (French) & Maximiliana (Latin)
  • Mélisande (may-lee-SAHND, French)--form of Millicent
  • Melitta (meh-LIT-tah, German, Scandinavian)--form of Melissa
  • Micheline (mee-sheh-LEEN, French)--form of Michele/Michaela
  • Mielikki (MEE-eh-lik-kee, Finnish)
  • Mihaela (mee-HYE-lah, Croatian, Romanian)--another form of Michaela/Michele
  • Milada (mee-LAH-dah, Croatian)
  • Milagros (mee-LAH-grohs, Spanish)--"miracles"
  • Milda (MEEL-dah, Lithuanian)--Lithuanian goddess of love
  • Milena (mee-LEH-nah, Slavic)--another form is Milana.
  • Milica (MEE-lee-tsah, Slavic)--also spelled Militsa
  • Milou (mee-LOO, Swedish, French)--from French, form of Émilie/Emilia
  • Milva (MEEL-vah, Italian)
  • Romilda (roh-MEEL-dah, Italian)--from Germanic, "famous battle'
  • Sharmila (shar-MEE-lah, Hindi)
  • Theomilla (theh-oh-MEE-lah, German)
